Sending money from the US bank to Honduras bank

Postby angel » Mon Apr 06, 2009 12:31 pm

I think you can go to COINSA to cash US checks, but I am not totally sure.

the best is to go to your US bank and set up SWIFT transfers to a Honduran US$ bank account. Or set that service so that you can do those SWIFT transfers yourself periodically. There is a fee however, charged by both banks.

My advice is to deposit US checks on the Honduran Bank account. First time it will take time but then it will be periodical , like a paycheck. No fee for that.

I think I will go with option No. 1. COIN S.A. They be located in Capital or San Pedro Sula ,I believe. Is this the way it works.? You write a check " pay to order __Mr. Smith $50.00 dollars USD_________ YOu present it to COIN S.A. They check your credentials ,passport number. etc.
Then they charge you a fee or commison ? they sell the check in dollars ,to some one else. or they deposit it ,to their account .? Thanks for your help. I be checking on this within a month. I would imagine my other options are. atm .for 1-3 % fee. or wire transfer. $35-$50 every month.

Your other options are ATMs with some fee depending on the US bank. some small US banks don't charge a fee. However you might already be too tied to one US bank and can't move the money to another or it's too much paper work. Benefit of this is that it's instant money. good for emergencies.

Wire transfer is the other option, it's semy fast but you can transfer ALOT of money this way for the same fee. Say you need those $15,000 for a car or a house, this would be the way to go if you need them quickly...ok one or two banking days.

The other option, if you are here for the long run and if you have a scheduled deposit on your US bank account is to deposit a check from that account on the Honduran bank. The first time around you will feel the delay. But from then on if you deposit on the same day every month you will get your money 15 days later every month and it will work well for you because there will be no fees for getting the money to Honduras. This is only good if the conditions above are meet. Those first 15 days you could live off your ATM withdrawls while the check is in transit.

It's always good to be in good relationship with the branch manager. They could unfreeze your deposited check sooner if they know you are a good customer and know a lot about you and how you get your money.

The nice thing is that there are over 15 banks that you can shop for services. The more you can tell me about your situation (without too many specifics since this is public) the more I can give you targeted advice. You said you planned on living in Ceiba. I would start you off by going to the branches of Bac-Bamer, Ficohsa, HSBC and Banco Atlantida and ask the manager or the cust service rep for the times and fees. Remember that they only know their fees, not the US bank fees.
